Se, come scrive Jean-Luc Marion, nel pieno dispiegamento della relazione erotica ciascuno diventa il fenomeno dell’altro, perché la carne dell’uno proviene dall’altro, questo divenire non può non avere delle ricadute a carico dell’attribuzione del sesso, e dunque dell’identità sessuale, all’uno o all’altro. Se la mia carne, sempre già sessuata per natura, diventa mia a partire dall’altro che me la dona, anche il mio sesso, non scorporabile dalla mia carne, risente della medesima eterogeneità. Così, nella misura in cui il sesso appartiene alla carne e si sottrae alla mera condizione di organo o apparato sessuale, esso non può che seguire il destino della carne che «realizza l’amante in un adonato». Questo vuol dire che il nostro sesso è sempre il sesso dell’altro, e cioè il sesso che ci viene dato all’interno della relazione erotica e che opera così, a posteriori, una riscrittura del sesso di cui per natura siamo dotati.

If, as Jean-Luc Marion writes, in the full unfolding of the erotic relationship each becomes the phenomenon of the other, because the flesh of one comes from the other, this becoming cannot fail to have repercussions on the attribution of sex, and therefore of sexual identity, to each. If my flesh, always already sexed by nature, becomes mine through the other who gives it to me, my sex, which cannot be separated from my flesh, is likewise affected by the same heterogeneity. Thus, insofar as sex belongs to the flesh and escapes the mere condition of a sexual organ or apparatus, it necessarily follows the destiny of the flesh that «realises the lover in an adonized being». This means that our sex is always the sex of the other, that is, the sex given to us within the erotic relationship, which thus operates, a posteriori, a rewriting of the sex with which we are naturally endowed.
