Lévinas dice spesso che Franz Rosenzweig fu all’origine della sua concezione del dialogo, ma in realtà Levinas si spinse molto più in là fino ad allontanarsene. Infatti, egli rapporta tanto l’amore quanto la trascendenza alla stessa socialità – e alla «prossimità umana», affermando che la questione centrale posta dal versetto biblico «Amerai il prossimo tuo come te stesso» (Lv 19,18) sia quella di sapere come approssimarsi all’Altro.

Lévinas often says that Franz Rosenzweig was at the origin of his conception of dialogue; however, Levinas went much further to the point of departing from it. In fact, he relates both love and transcendence to sociality itself – and to “human proximity”, arguing that the central question posed by the biblical verse «You shall love your neighbor as yourself» (Lev 19,18) concerns how to approach the Other.
