La filosofia di Merleau-Ponty si apre ad un certo tipo di politica e, se sì, quale? Questa domanda ha talvolta lasciato perplessi gli interpreti, favorendo tentativi divergenti di sistematizzazione del suo pensiero politico. In verità, le sue osservazioni sulla politica invitano a interpretazioni piuttosto eterogenee: dai tentativi di identificare tale pensiero come una sorta di «politica esistenziale» fino a quelli che vi vedono una fedeltà – almeno fino a Umanesimo e Terrore – nei confronti dello «scenario marxista», mentre altri lo hanno paragonato ad una svolta verso il liberalismo. Negli ultimi anni, la filosofia politica merleau-pontyana ha riscosso una rinnovata attenzione, in particolare nel contesto di un dibattito polarizzato tra le teorie del «potere costituente» e del «potere destituente». L’articolo intende discutere in che misura le osservazioni del filosofo francese sulla politica offrano non solo un contributo a tale discussione, ma segnino di fatto una rottura decisiva con questa alternativa tra potere costituente e destituente. Inoltre esso accenna alle potenzialità contenute in una possibile «terza via», quella del «potere istituente». Quindi verrà delineato in che senso una riflessione sull’istituzione si discosta da una riflessione su ciò che potremmo chiamare la “costitutività” (e sulla sua controparte, la “destitutività”) e indicherà perché tale riflessione mira a superare l’opposizione tra forza e forma, ancora presente nelle teorie del potere costituente e destituente.

Does Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy open onto a certain kind of politics and if so, which one? This question has sometimes puzzled commentators, making way for divergent attempts of a categorization of his political thought. Indeed his remarks on politics invite quite heterogeneous interpretations: from the attempts to identify his thinking as some sort of «existential politics» up to those who see a fidelity – at least until Humanism and Terror – to the «Marxist scenario», while others have compared it to a turn towards liberalism. In recent years, Merleu-Ponty’s political philosophy has gained renewed attention, in particular in the context of a polarized debate between the theories of «constituent power» and the theories of «destituent power». The paper aims at discussing to what extent the French philosopher’s observations on politics offer not only a contribution to, but mark in fact a decisive break with this alternative between constituent and destituent power. Moreover, it hints to the potentials contained in a possible «third way», that of «instituent power» (pouvoir instituant). The paper shall thus outline in what sense a reflection on instituency deviates from a reflection on “constituency” (and on its counterpart, “destituency”), and indicate why such a reflection aims at overcoming the opposition between force and form, still present in the theories of constituent and of destituent power.
