Il primato del potere sulla memoria trasforma gli eventi umani in ricordi, raccolti in modo artificioso e interessato in una narrazione storica, che occulta la propria radice particolare e pretende di valere universalmente. Questa è la storia dell’Occidente. il saggio prova a chiedere cosa succederebbe fosse possibile fare invece che la memoria avesse il primato sul potere. La storia, in nome del presente, congiura contro il passato e riduce il futuro a ciò che, per adesso, da sempre esiste. La debole forza messianica della memoria, invece, proietta il futuro sul passato e condanna il presente. Non lascia che la ferita del tempo si chiuda. A quale “Occidente” potrebbe corrispondere questo primato della memoria, e che tipo di arte potrebbe corrispondergli? Questa è la domanda nella quale il saggio inoltra la questione sulla verità d’Europa.

The primacy of power on memory transforms human events into recollections, put together in a historical narration in a factitious and interested manner, narration which conceals its own particular origin and claims to be universally valid. This is the history of the Western world. The essay tries to ask what would happen if it were possible that memory had the primacy over power. History, in the name of the present, conspires against the past and reduces the future to that which, for now, has always existed. The weak messianic power of memory, instead, projects the future on the past and condemns the present. It doesn’t let the wound of time close up. To what “Western world” could this primacy of memory correspond, and what type of art could correspond to it? This is the question into which the essay submits the issue of the truth of Europe.
