L’articolo esplora la relazione che la riflessione di Cornelius Castoriadis intrattiene con la filosofia di Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Dopo aver presentato il senso e i concetti chiave dell’ontologia indiretta elaborata dal fenomenologo francese negli ultimi anni della sua vita, mostra come tali concetti, a partire da quello di istituzione, siano stati ripresi durante gli anni Sessanta da Castoriadis insieme a Claude Lefort, Marcel Gauchet e Marc Richir. Riunito intorno alla rivista «Textures», questo gruppo di pensatori rielabora l’ontologia merleau-pontyana utilizzandola nella propria analisi della dimensione sociale e politica. Emerge così, nei primi anni Settanta, una teoria che definisce il sociale come istituzione simbolica. Castoriadis partecipa a questo lavoro collettivo che lo porta alla scrittura de L’istituzione immaginaria della società. L’attenzione alla creazione e all’immaginario lo conducono però in una direzione differente e verso la critica del pensiero di Merleau-Ponty.

This article examines the relationship between the thought of Cornelius Castoriadis and the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. It begins by outlining the meaning and central concepts of the indirect ontology developed by Merleau-Ponty in the final years of his life. It then shows how these concepts – particularly that of institution – were taken up in the 1960s by Castoriadis, along with Claude Lefort, Marcel Gauchet, and Marc Richir. This group of thinkers, gathered in the journal «Textures», reinterpreted Merleau-Ponty’s ontology to address social and political dimensions. By the early 1970s, their collaborative efforts had produced a coherent theoretical framework that defined the social as a symbolic institution. Castoriadis was an active participant in this collective project, which culminated in his major work The Imaginary Institution of Society. However, his emphasis on creation and the imaginaryeventually led him to diverge from Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy, offering a critical response to its limitations.
