Obiettivo di questo saggio è mostrare l’incidenza della politica nel pensiero di Merleau-Ponty e valorizzare quest’ultimo in relazione a tale incidenza. Innanzitutto sono riattraversate le tappe salienti del suo percorso, biografiche e filosofiche: dall’adesione al cattolicesimo di sinistra e poi al marxismo fino alla presa di distanza dal «comunismo realizzato». Quindi, al centro dell’analisi sono poste le acquisizioni più rilevanti conseguite, nell’ambito della riflessione politica, dal filosofo francese. A partire dal ripensamento radicale della nozione di «istituzione». Ne discendono alcune conseguenze di grande fecondità e attualità: la critica all’impostazione “razionalistico-spirituale” della politica in Europa; una nuova nozione di «soggetto», non individuale ma inter-relazionale o multipolare; la ridefinizione del ruolo dell’intellettuale.

The aim of this essay is to highlight the intense and fruitful relationship between Merleau-Ponty’s thought and politics – something that for decades has been inexplicably undervalued. First, it retraces the key biographical and philosophical stages of the French philosopher’s career: from his embrace of left-wing Catholicism and then Marxism, to his distancing from «realized communism» and his critique of Marxism itself. It is in these stages that his specific approach to politics is already revealed. Furthermore, and consequently, the analysis focuses on the most significant findings of Merleau-Ponty’s political thought –including the radical rethinking of the notion of «institution». This has led to some very incisive and highly relevant results: the critique of a purely «rationalist-spiritual» vision of politics; a new notion of «subject», not individual but inter-relational; and the redefinition of the role of the intellectual.
