La scrittura del sé è stata a lungo considerata una forma di scrittura attraverso la quale il soggetto che scrive è in grado di guardare retrospettivamente alla propria storia come al dispiegarsi continuativo di un’identità. Da questo punto di vista, i momenti di conversione non costituirebbero veri e propri punti di discontinuità, ma snodi di uno sviluppo unitario della storia individuale. Il contributo considera al contrario la conversione come un principio dinamico, di creazione e di produzione dell’io all’interno del testo. L’idea che l’identità non sia qualcosa che precede la scrittura, ma che la segue come un evento che sorge dalla tensione tra βίος e γραφία, appartiene tanto al genere della confessione, come mostra Zambrano, quanto alla scrittura autobiografica tipica della modernità. Tuttavia, seppur formalmente presente in entrambi i generi, la conversione svolge un ruolo radicalmente distinto nella letteratura di confessione e in quella autobiografica. Il contributo si propone di riflettere sui presupposti che investono le differenti posizioni dell’io di chi scrive e, di conseguenza, sul valore particolare che la conversione assume per l’io nella scrittura del sé.

Writing of the self has long been regarded as a form of writing, through which the writing subject is able to look retrospectively at his or her own history as the on-going unfolding of an identity. From this point of view, the conversions would not constitute real points of discontinuity, but episodes of a unitary development of the individual history. On the contrary, the paper aims to consider conversion as a dynamic principle of creation and production of the self within the text. The idea that identity is not something that precedes writing, but follows it as an event that arises from the tension between βίος and γραφία, belongs as much to the genre of confession, as Zambrano shows, as to autobiographical writing, as is evident in Valéry, Amiel and de Beauvoir. However, even if it is formally active in both genres, conversion plays a radically different role in confessional literature than it does in modern autobiographical works. The paper aims at reflecting on the assumptions that invest the different positions of the writer's ego and, consequently, on the particular value that conversion assumes for the ego in the writing of the self.
