Comment envisager encore le monde après 1945 ? Comment l’histoire, saturée d’horreur, ne pourrait-elle pas apparaître comme le visage désespéré de la culpabilité, de la complicité et de l’indifférence passées ? Cette question fondamentale constitue sans doute l’un des points de départ – à la fois philosophiques et politiques – de la réflexion de Merleau-Ponty. Refusant d’opposer ce qui pourrait être perçu comme l’accomplissement dramatique de l’histoire humaine à l’idée de liberté inconditionnelle des hommes et des femmes, et refusant ainsi de penser malgré l’histoire, Merleau-Ponty considère l’histoire elle-même comme la matière à partir de laquelle il est possible de recommencer. Milieu mixte, façonné comme un chiasme, traversé et structuré par des déterminations sédimentées, mais aussi lieu d’inventivité humaine, l’histoire constitue le critère, sans cesse refondé et reconquis, d’une liberté conditionnelle. Le statut épistémologique et la fécondité politique de cette liberté sont d’une originalité exceptionnelle et méritent d’être reconnus. Avec Merleau-Ponty, une autre manière de penser l’histoire ouvre ainsi la possibilité d’une autre histoire.

How could the world be considered again after 1945? How could history, saturated with horror, not be the hopeless face of past guilt, complicity, and indifference? This fundamental question is undoubtedly one of the starting points – both philosophical and political – of Merleau-Ponty’s reflection. Refusing to oppose what could be conceived of as a dramatic fulfilment of human history with the idea of the unconditional freedom of men and women, and refusing to think in spite of history, Merleau-Ponty considers history itself as the material from which to begin again. A mixed milieu, shaped like a chiasm, traversed and shaped by sedimented determinations, but also a locus of human inventiveness, history is the gauge, incessantly refounded and reclaimed, of a conditional freedom. The epistemological status and political fecundity of this freedom are extraordinarily original and must be restored. With Merleau-Ponty, another way of thinking about history therefore opens up the possibility of another history.
