Gianni Vattimo’s philosophical path emerges at the intersection of multiple influences, legacies, intertwinements, and disseminations. On the one hand, his thought is deeply rooted in major traditions – most prominently, in the legacy of Friedrich Nietzsche and in existentialism. On the other, his distinctive hermeneutic orientation continues to generate critical engagement, both among thinkers who see themselves as his intellectual heirs and among those who position themselves in contrast to his philosophical stance. This issue of «Il Pensiero» invites contributions that explore the broader context of Gianni Vattimo’s thought. The term “context” is to be understood in a comprehensive sense, encompassing both the formative inspirations and conceptual frameworks that informed his intellectual development, as well as the enduring influence and reception of his work within contemporary philosophical and interdisciplinary debates.

The sources of Vattimo’s originality are traceable primarily to the German philosophical tradition of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Nevertheless, his early engagement with Aristotle and with strands of French thought – particularly those shaped by religious sensibilities – also merit attention. Equally significant are the dialogues he maintained across different stages of his career: with structuralism and post-structuralism, with neo-pragmatism, and with postcolonial theory. At the same time, Vattimo’s intellectual figure can be reconsidered in the light of the legacy he leaves to ongoing debates: from his contributions to philosophical aesthetics, to his rethinking of secularization, and to his critical engagement in political discourse. Also in this sense, Vattimo’s presence in contemporary thought – whether syntonic or antagonistic – remains both relevant and multifaceted.

We welcome submissions that investigate the genealogies of Vattimo’s philosophy, its theoretical reverberations in later debates, or contributions that pursue both perspectives – tracing lines of inquiry before and after Vattimo. Proposals may address any of the domains his work has intersected with: from core philosophical questions to political theory, social sciences, art theory, literature, or religious studies.
