In queste pagine ci proponiamo in primo luogo di delineare la ripresa, nel pensiero di Judith Butler, di alcuni temi centrali della filosofia contemporanea: la crisi dell’universalismo, la critica della nozione di identità e il rapporto tra soggettivazione, alienazione e riconoscimento. La tematizzazione butleriana di un’identità «fluida» intende rispondere a tali questioni rifacendosi alla critica del «pensiero identificante» (Adorno), al costruttivismo femminista (de Beauvoir) e alla teoria del potere come dispositivo di soggettivazione e assoggettamento (Althusser). Seguendo Rahel Jaeggi vedremo tuttavia come Butler erediti anche le impasses di questi riferimenti. Ella radicalizza infatti la critica dell’alienazione individuando in ogni identità socialmente mediata una funzione delle strutture di potere; il suo antifondazionalismo, tuttavia, le impedisce di affermare un Sé o un’autenticità presociali, e dunque di stabilire che cosa venga effettivamente alienato. La proposta butleriana può dunque essere corretta mediante un’articolazione più sfumata del rapporto tra riconoscimento sociale e soggettività, che non consegni quest’ultima alla mera indeterminatezza.

Abstract [Eng]

The first aim of this paper is to outline Judith Butler’s take on some central themes in contemporary philosophy: the crisis of universalism, the critique of the notion of identity, and the relationship between subjectivation, alienation and recognition. Butler’s proposal of a «fluid» identity aims to respond to these questions by referring back to Adorno’s critique of «identity thinking», de Beauvoir’s feminist constructivism and Althusser’s theory of power as a means of both subjectivation and subjection. Following Rahel Jaeggi’s critical remarks, however, we will see how Butler also inherits the impasses of these references. She radicalizes the critique of alienation by identifying every socially mediated identity as a function of power; however, her anti-foundationalism prevents her from affirming a pre-social Self or authenticity, and thus from determining what is actually alienated. Butler’s proposal can therefore be corrected: a more nuanced articulation of the relationship between social recognition and subjectivity can keep the latter determined and allow its alienations to be more effectively criticized.
